Workers Comp Settlements: What You Need To Think About Before Settling

Workers compensation settlements need to be carefully thought about because in most cases you are negotiating money that will have to sustain you for a while. If you go about the process wrong you can end up having to lower your standard of living, not being able to properly support your family, and having to struggle for the rest of your life possibly. So you need to carefully think this out first by answering the following two questions.

Is the lump sum payment you are going to receive fair?

Do not think about the amount of money as it pertains to your ability to pay current bills. I want you to think about what this money will mean for you in the future. Now I do not know how serious your injury might be, but depending on the severity of it you might require additional things that cost a lot of money.

The amount of money you receive must cover your immediate expenses and they should also be enough for you to live off of until you are ready to return back to work. Do not factor in any other insurance you might have for getting injured, as these are separate things that will not apply in this case.

If your injuries are permanent, and you will not be able to go back to that particular job, your workers compensation settlements should be enough to get you through several years.

How will your injuries impact you over a lifetime?

You could end up having chronic pain for the rest of your life that might get worse as you age. You might be forced into retirement early; in this case you would not have enough retirement savings to support yourself. You might have to take a pay cut even if you were able to go back to work because of not being able to do the same job. All of these things must be considered when you are negotiating workers compensation settlements.

These two questions are very basic but I feel they are the hardest hitting and thought provoking questions you need to answer. If you are seriously hurt then you cannot earn income, which puts you in a vulnerable position. Your workers compensation settlements must take this in mind, and they must reflect the extent of your injuries along with how they will impact you in the future.
